Calpe Restaurant Review: La Mamma Nostra restaurant in Calpe

I?m enjoying these Calpe restaurant reviews ? I hope that you are too! Once again my girlfriend and I were invited out for a meal in Calpe by my parents and this time we opted to go to La Mamma Nostra Italian restaurant in Calpe, which is at the end of Playa La Fossa-Levante close to Calpe Rock. Whilst walking my dog I had noticed that this Calpe restaurant does a men? del d?a for just 10.90? which sounded like pretty good value to me. They also do two more men? del d?a prices at 13.90? and 15.90?. Of course, as with all Calpe restaurants, La Mamma Nostra also has a comprehensive ? la carte menu too with typical Italian fare such as pastas and pizzas.

Along with the menus came a complimentary strawberry cava cocktail which was lovely and very hot fresh rolls (gorgeous flavour and texture) and a stunning homemade alioli. This was looking to be a very good evening indeed! A short while later another waiter took our wine and food order and continued to greet the many other diners piling into the restaurant.

Starters

In the 10.90? men? del d?a option there are three starters to choose between which are Spanish tortilla, tuna salad or soup of the day. My mum plumped for the tuna salad whilst us remaining three liked the sound of the soup of the day which was pork and vegetable. I have to say that the soup was utterly lovely and very hot, and my dad and girlfriend agreed. It had a good helping of vegetables and tasty fatty pork lardons in a very flavoursome broth. The tuna salad that my mum chose was large and she liked it very much. The tuna was quite dark in colour which leads me to assume that the tuna was fresh and not canned. A good sign indeed.

Mains

At 10.90? for the whole meal one expects the main course not to be too complicated or fussy and you?d be right! The choices on offer were grilled panga (fish), meatballs in tomato sauce and chicken in a creamy paprika sauce. My girlfriend and I picked the chicken and the waiter informed us that these were the last two paprika chickens of the night, which somewhat surprised me as it was only 7.45pm, so my mum, who also wanted the chicken, choose the meatballs instead. I offered to swap but she wasn?t too bothered! Our final dining partner also went for the meatballs.

There was a pleasant atmosphere in this Calpe restaurant and although the large party was a little noisy to begin with they soon quietened down as the food was bought. I think we all agreed on the mains that they were very nice and tasty, but not overly special or memorable. That?s fine though. At 10.90? for a men? del d?a one cannot expect to be blown away with incredible food ? ?tasty? and ?very nice? is more than enough! What did surprise us all was that the mains all came with half a jacket potato. This didn?t seem very Italian to us, and we felt that it was a little unusual as we have never eaten a jacket potato with a main course at any restaurant in Calpe, but as it happens the potato was done really well and tasted great.

The house wine we chose with the meal was fine. I can?t remember what grape it was except that it was a 2010 wine. Half a bottle of wine is included in the price of a men? del d?a. Three of us were drinking wine but I only ever remember one bottle being bought so I think perhaps that we missed out here, but it wasn?t intentional I am sure.

Desserts

There were five desserts on offer with the lowest priced men? del d?a and I can only remember four of them. (Perhaps they did bring out that extra half bottle of wine!) The choices were: lemon and sugar crepe, chocolate crepe, chocolate ice cream, creme catal?n and one more? Two of us picked the ?traditional pancake? (as I like to call) it of lemon and sugar, my father picked the chocolate crepe whilst my girlfriend opted for the chocolate ice cream. All arrived promptly and very nicely presented. The chocolate ice cream had a strawberry sauce over it so my girlfriend was in dessert heaven! The chocolate crepe had plenty of sauce and dollop of cream, and the last two ?pancakes? had a slice of lemon (Sicilian?), cream and sugar. Beautiful! This, of course, prompted a discussion all about pancakes and how much we like them but only eat them once a year?

What do we think?

Complimentary lemon drinks at La Mamma Nostra restaurant in CalpeWe asked for the bill and the waiter bought it along with four small chilled glasses filled with a lemony drink. I don?t think it had any alcohol in, and perhaps it was simply a drink with lemon juice as its major ingredient, but it was refreshing and rather lovely. The bill for four of us came to 43.60?. There were no hidden extras so a meal consisting of a cava cocktail, hot roll and alioli, bowl of tasty olives, a starter, main, dessert, half a bottle of wine and farewell drink at 10.90? each is excellent value in my opinion.

The atmosphere was great and this Calpe restaurant has a really nice feel to it. Both waiters (one I suspect is the boss) were efficient and friendly and the food was great. We would definitely recommend La Mamma Nostra in Calpe. I would like to go to this Italian restaurant in Calpe to try their pizzas sometime, but their pizza prices are a fair bit higher than our favourite Pizza restaurant in Calpe, Casanova Italian Restaurant, whose pizzas are simply amazing! Perhaps La Mamma Nostra can prove me wrong sometime!
