All systems are go at Tacoma?s hottest new site.

Car lovers, rev up those engines. Beginning June 2, a brand-new, four-story museum celebrates America?s love affair with the automobile. Sited on a nine-acre campus in Tacoma, LeMay?America?s Car Museum (ACM) can be found adjacent to the Tacoma Dome and off I-5 (annually traveled by more than 7 million motorists).

According to museum staff, ?ACM is designed to preserve history and celebrate the world?s automotive culture. The spacious facility will house up to 350 cars, trucks and motorcycles from private owners, corporations and the LeMay collection, which amassed a Guinness Book record of more than 3,500 vehicles in the mid-?90s.?

So what will visitors find here? A 165,000-square-foot museum, center for collectors? cars, 3.5-acre show field, banquet hall, cafe/restaurant and more. Displays will feature cars ranging from a 1906 Cadillac Model M and a 1921 Ford Model T to more recent gems like a 1983 DeLorean DMC 12.

As Gaga brings her Born This Way Ball to Bangkok, Thailand's government is enraged over her plans to buy fake goods.

Lady Gaga apparently wants to go shopping in preparation for her next concert in Bangkok — for a fake Rolex.

At least that's what she told her 24 million Twitter followers upon her arrival in Bangkok on Wednesday (May 30). "I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy fake Rolex."

The tweet sparked instantaneous uproar on various social media and web forums, as many local residents felt the comment was insulting, abrasive and generally damaging to the reputation of Thailand. Gaga has yet to apologize for the tweet.

The Commerce Ministry of Thailand is in a long-standing battle with piracy, and members of the government feel that this message directly undermines their efforts. An official at the ministry's Intellectual Property Department recently told Reuters that: "Lady Gaga is a representative of the U.S. and the U.S. puts pressure on smaller countries to promote the protection of intellectual property," adding that "she should tell her fans that they shouldn't use fake goods."

The controversial message has also been addressed by members of Thailand's music industry. Thai DJ Suharit Siamwalla responded by tweeting: "We are more civilized than you think," then added that he now plans to boycott Gaga's show on Friday.

It seems that Mother Monster just can't seem to stay out of trouble as her Born This Way Ball makes its way across Asia. The Thailand controversy comes almost immediately after she had to cancel a show in Indonesia, and then responded to various Islamic threats surrounding that show.

Not all fans have taken umbrage with Gaga's latest comments. Throngs of fans awaited her arrival to the hotel, and people are already camped outside Rajamangala stadium in hopes of being one of the lucky "monsters" who get to meet the pop star.

Nuts, seeds, using a soy margarine like Earth Balance instead of butter, it has a lot of good fats. Just try to load up on polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats and stay away from saturated fat and trans fat.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nearly 22 million TV viewers seems like a lot ? but for an "American Idol" season-ender, it's a new low.

The crowd that tuned in Wednesday night when bluesy guitar man Phillip Phillips won the "Idol" crown constituted the smallest for an "Idol" finale in its history, according to final Nielsen Co. figures.

The audience of 21.5 million was down by nearly one-third from the 29.3 million viewers who saw country singer Scotty McCreery's victory a year ago, an audience total that had rebounded by 20 percent from the finale in 2010.

The Fox singing competition has experienced ratings erosion during this entire season, its 11th.

ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" finale show on Tuesday night also drew its lowest audience ever for a season-capper, averaging 17.5 million viewers, down 18 percent from a year ago.

According to police department spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss, "it is common for BPD officers to actively?investigate an in-progress tracking signal from a stolen electronic device." The iPhone's signal stopped sending information in a North Oakland neighborhood, and was never found.

According to records, neither Meehan nor his son actually filed a report over the missing iPhone. Meehan declined comment on the incident to local reporters.

What is a Brand?

While there are numerous definitions in the business literature, the one I use most often with my clients is:

?A brand is a set of associations in the minds of customers linked to a product or service by its name, logo, and other visual, aural and tactile elements, that is perceived to provide them with a compelling promise of value.?

This definition is useful in three ways:

• It makes clear that the battleground for a brand is the minds of customers, and that the road to potential victory is made possible only if brands can be distinguished from each other through their names, logos and other branding elements.
• It requires us to acknowledge that products and services are at the heart of the attraction that a brand has for its customers and a key aspect of the value they are seeking.
• It reminds us of the purpose of a brand ? that customers are not seeking products and services per se, but rather compelling value that helps them to achieve their rational and more abstract goals.

What is Brand Strategy?

Brand strategy is the means by which we associate a brand with a compelling promise of value in the minds of customers. It highlights the business practices and processes that are employed to build strong brands and businesses. Brand strategy and marketing strategy have so little separating them that, in my opinion, they are synonymous and I will be using them on this blog interchangeably.

A great brand strategy always incorporates the following aspects:

• It emphasizes an important principle about strategy in general: that you must make choices about what you will do and what you will not do because you cannot build a strong brand and business by choosing to be all things to all people.
• It makes explicit the target customers that a business is choosing to serve, the compelling value that they are seeking, both rational and abstract, and a justification of why the business can win these customers.
• It leads to strategic execution. This is the artful and rigorous real-world manifestation of the strategy so that the brand and business can create, deliver and communicate the compelling value desired by its customers. Importantly, this strategic execution focuses on creating and delivering the necessary product, pricing, place, people and communication strategies for the brand and business. It is through these strategies that customers are able to distinguish the brand from competitors and to associate the brand and business with its compelling promise of value.

What is Branding?

Branding refers to a brand?s communication strategies and includes:

• Brand naming, logos and symbols
• Visual, aural and tactile branding elements
• Marketing communications, i.e. advertising, on-line, etc.

As the voice of the brand these strategies have two main functions:

1. They ensure that target customers can identify your brand by distinguishing it from its competitors.
2. They play an important role in communicating the brand?s promise of value for its customers.

Clearly branding is essential for building strong brands and businesses. But it is only one of the five important aspects of the strategic execution of a well-conceived brand strategy.

It serves little purpose helping customers to distinguish your brand from the competition, or to communicate the brand?s promise of value to them, unless your product, pricing, place and people strategies are de facto capable of creating and delivering on this promise of value.

Brand strategy is the means by which we associate a brand with a compelling promise of value in the minds of customers. That?s because brand strategy is about creating, delivering and communicating the compelling value that customers are seeking.

So if you, like the Chief Marketing Officer who invited me in to help with her branding, are tasked with building your brand and business, you now have other factors to consider.

'Forrest Gump' actor Sinise to raise money for vet

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Actor Gary Sinise, known for playing Vietnam War amputee Lt. Dan in the film "Forrest Gump," is keeping his promise to raise money for a southwest Virginia Marine who lost his limbs while on a mine sweep in Afghanistan.

After canceling a March benefit concert due to a car accident, the star of TV's "CSI: New York" is set to perform with his band, named after his fictional Lt. Dan character, in Martinsville on Thursday. The cover band's performance is part of a fundraiser to help build a specially equipped home for 22-year-old Patrick County Marine Cpl. J.B. Kerns, who lost his right arm below the elbow and both his legs below the knees in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2011 during his third tour of duty.

The 57-year-old Sinise's foundation, along with others like the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, have helped build several such "smart homes" for wounded veterans across the country as part of an ongoing efforts to support U.S. military personnel and first responders. The foundations partnered to create the Building For America's Bravest program to build the homes.

Nearly 1,450 military personnel have been treated at military facilities for amputations during post-9/11 operations, and more than 435 have multiple amputations, according to the Department of Defense. And the department says that those wounded in battle now have a 50 percent better chance of surviving than any previous war because of improved armor, better medical training and emergency care.

"These are young guys that have been blown to bits and they've given a lot for their country and they're going to have to go for the rest of their lives with a real challenge," Sinise said in an interview with The Associated Press. "We're trying to do as much as we can for as many of them as possible."

Sinise hopes his fundraising efforts can give those wounded, like Kerns, a "place that is adapted to their needs so that they know for the rest of their lives they have a place to call home."

The smart homes are custom designed to meet the needs of the amputee and typically feature energy-efficient appliances, along with automated systems to help them handle everyday tasks, said John Hodge, a spokesman for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Even cabinets and drawers can be opened and closed by pushing a button or an application on an iPad. The costs for the homes range from $500,000 to $1 million, depending on the location and features, Hodge said.

For Kerns, the new home will help him be more independent, but he said his disability hasn't stopped him from living life to the fullest.

"I might be missing three limbs but I still do a lot of stuff I used to do. I still ride my four-wheeler, I still go out shooting and fishing and hunting," Kerns said. "Ever since I've gotten hurt I've had good spirits about anything and everything. I'm going to do what I want to do, you know. I'm not going to let it slow me down."

Kerns said he thinks it's great that Sinise stuck to his word and is "giving up his free time" to help raise money for his new home.

Sinise became more active in supporting military members like Kerns after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but has long been involved with similar efforts.

When playing the role of Lt. Dan, who lost both his legs during combat, Sinise worked with Vietnam War veterans groups and wanted to honor vets "with an accurate portrayal of a Vietnam veteran who didn't end up committing suicide or getting drunk at the end of the story, but he's successful and he's walking around and he's moving forward with his life."

"Certainly his disability was important, but it didn't define him at the end," Sinise said of his character. "I've met incredible, inspirational guys who have lost parts of their body in service to our country and if I can get out there and help them ... it is my privilege and honor to do that."

Solar eclipse 2012: All systems go for witnessing rare 'ring of fire' (+video)

A rare annular eclipse, where a ?ring of fire? outlines the moon as it crosses the sun, will greet US viewers Sunday evening. Residents of the US West will have a good shot at seeing the full fire ring.

The last time an annular solar eclipse hovered above Los Angeles, in 1992, a ?dumb cloud,? as one young skygazer said at the time, ruined the show. On Sunday, Angelenos will get another, hopefully much better, shot at witnessing at least part of a phenomenon where the face of the moon can?t quite block the sun, creating either a partial or complete halo in the sky.

Aside from some localized fog and cloud banks, weather forecasters are calling for mostly clear skies for a paintbrush stroke of the US that runs from Oregon to northern Texas, where locals will be able to see the full ring of fire as it appears on the US continental shelf for the first time in nearly 20 years. (Los Angeles is slightly south of the zone, meaning residents will instead see a crescent sun? ? which is nothing to sneeze at, either.)

?Right now, it appears the majority of the territory in the zone of the annular eclipse ? will be in good shape with two possible exceptions,? writes the Weather Channel?s Chris Dolce. ?The tail end of a frontal boundary and an upslope wind flow could bring some isolated thunderstorms and cloud cover to eastern New Mexico and western Texas. Elsewhere, an approaching frontal system off the Northwest coast is likely to bring extensive cloud cover to southwest Oregon and far northwest California.?

Hundreds of national parks and astronomy enthusiasts are planning viewing parties across the region, with Texas authorities suggesting those who want to see the full effect head to the northern part of the state, like Lubbock or even up into Albuquerque, in New Mexico, where the viewing is likely to be prime.

Some of the best specific places to witness the eclipse include Utah?s Zion National Park, California?s Lake Tahoe region, Arizona?s Grand Canyon, and the pueblos of northern New Mexico.

(Remember, don?t look at the sun directly through anything less than No. 14 arc-welders glasses. Use projection devices instead, such as a hole pricked in a sheet of printer paper.)

Californians, for their part, are being cautioned that inland areas may be better than beaches for watching the eclipse, since the regular gray clouds that roll in from the Pacific in the evening can arrive as early as 5 p.m. Depending on location,? the eclipse will begin around 5:24 p.m. local time in California, peak at 6:38, with the full sun revealed again at 7:42 p.m., a few minutes before sunset.

Sunday?s rare annular eclipse is part of what?s become an astronomically active spring in the US, where excited skywatchers have in recent weeks bore witness to meteor showers and a ?super moon.?

The next major solar eclipse in the US won?t come until August 21, 2017, although Australia and parts of the South Pacific will see one later this year, on Nov. 17.
