Franklin police using Twitter to connect with residents

FRANKLIN TWP. -- A few months ago, officials in Franklin Township were discussing a common small-town complaint.

It seemed that too many township residents believed the police department wasn't justifying its expense because they weren't hearing about what the officers were doing.

The problem, said Sgt. Brian Speer, is that with only one officer on duty, every minute spent assembling, typing and issuing press releases is a minute that no one is patrolling the township.

So Speer decided to keep the public informed, 140 characters at a time.

"I thought that was an easy media and it didn't cost us a dime," he said of the decision to open a Twitter account -- @FRANKLINTWPPD -- to help the police department connect with township residents.

Recent tweets have offered congratulations to Speer and fellow township officer Matt Irvin on their promotions to sergeant, warned that there would be extra patrols in the township on New Year's Eve and advised residents to have emergency kits in their vehicles with the approach of winter.

And announced that a woman had been treated at Ellwood City Hospital and released for injuries in a purse-snatching incident Monday at Franklin Plaza. Police described the attacker as being around 6 feet tall and weighing between 140 and 160 pounds.

The thief had dark hair and was wearing a black or dark blue hooded sweat shirt with blue jeans. Police said he approached the woman on the sidewalk and pushed her to the ground while stealing her purse.

Speer said police don't have any suspects in the incident and? anyone with information on the incident can call the Franklin department through the Beaver County 911 center at (724) 843-3421.
