Supercar makers chase China?s superrich

China's superrich want supercars.

That's what the makers of world's most exotic and expensive sports cars are hoping as they gather in Macau this week for the first Asian edition of Monaco's annual Top Marques show that began eight years ago.

The supercar companies are chasing growth in China, which is churning out scores of new millionaires each year and is home to the world's biggest auto market.

Ferraris and Lamborghinis sat alongside rare and beautiful automotive works of art from lesser known marques like Italy's Pagani, West Richland, Wash.-based SSC and Sweden's Koenigsegg. They drew admiring looks from wealthy auto enthusiasts from China and other Asian countries.

Sales staff were hoping to sign deals with some of the 20,000 expected visitors. One of them was Steve Chen, who built his fortune in China with a motivational speaking business. He was admiring the Pagani Huayra, an ?849,000 ($1.1 million) street rocket sheathed in carbon fiber and titanium with gull wing doors and a V-12 engine churning out 700 horsepower.

Chen was thinking of buying a Pagani or a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport to add to his collection of 15 to 16 high-end cars, which he divides between his bases in Taiwan and Shanghai.

"I go to a lot of auto shows in China. I've loved cars since I was a kid and I have been collecting many different car brands," said Chen, who opened his leather satchel to reveal keys for a Ferrari, a Lamborghini and a Rolls-Royce, careful not to display them too ostentatiously.

Story: These luxury cars have the highest theft rates

Chen, who visited the Bugatti factory in France for a test drive, said he admired the Veyron's top speed of more than 400 km/h (250 mph) though he did wonder aloud to the sales staff why the car, which has a list price of 39 million yuan ($6.1 million) in China, was so expensive.

China's billionaire ranks, boosted by the country's fast-growing economy, swelled to 271 in 2011, 82 more than last year, according to the Hurun Report, China's version of the Forbes rich list. The number of millionaires grew by 85,000 in 2011 to 960,000. Rising wealth levels are reflected across Asia, which had 3.3 million millionaires last year, surpassing Europe for the first time and closing in on North America's top spot, according to a study by Merrill Lynch and Capgemini.

With so much wealth being created, "there's a fair bit of competition and these companies will now have to establish their brands and see if their brands will get a following," said Amar Gill, who authored a recent CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets report on Asia's wealthy.

China's vast expanses, linked by an extensive network of newly built of freeways, could help business for supercar makers.

"Given that you've got these long stretches you can drive on, having a nice car is a bigger attraction than being in a city-state where it's just a status symbol," said Gill, who is based in Singapore.

Organizers of the four-day show, which ends Sunday, expected about 60 percent of visitors to be from mainland China, with another 20 percent from Hong Kong and the same amount from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

Cadillac seeks to regain lost luxury turf

"The growth in China has been exponential and the various manufacturers who are represented here today have all noticed that their biggest market is China," said show organizer John Hardyment.

China's supercar "market is growing rapidly, growing a lot faster than the entire car market," said Wilson Lee, Lamborghini SpA's Beijing-based head of China operations.

To be sure, the supercar market is a small portion of China's overall auto sales, which rose 32 percent last year to 18 million vehicles. Sales have slowed this year and analysts forecast growth of less than 10 percent.

Lamborghini, owned by Volkswagen AG, expects to sell about 350 cars in China this year, 70 percent more than last year, Lee said.

China overtook the U.S. this year to become Lamborghini's biggest market and Lee predicted similar sales growth for "another two years before it levels down a little bit." The company opened five dealerships in China this year, adding to 14 existing ones. When the 20th opens next year, China will have a sixth of the company's 120 dealerships worldwide.

Most Chinese Lamborghini buyers are worth at least 100 million renminbi ($16 million) and nine in 10 pay in cash, Lee said. About two-thirds are younger people aged 20 to 32 from wealthy families while 10-20 percent are older auto enthusiasts who drive their supercars mainly at the track on weekends. The remaining 10 percent don't drive them at all.

"We call them collectors. They just put it at home like a fine painting or piece of art or sculpture. They have huge houses and they will have their whole collection of luxury cars on display," Lee said. "Some of these cars don't have a single kilometer on them. They basically forklift it and put it down at home because they don't want to put any miles on the car."

India opens more to foreign multibrand retailers

(AP) ? India's Cabinet decided Thursday to allow more direct foreign investment in the nation's huge retail industry, a move that could strengthen the country's food supply chain and open India to giant global retailers such as Wal-Mart.

The Cabinet approved 51 percent foreign direct investment in multibrand retail and increased the FDI cap in single-brand retail to 100 percent despite resistance from both allies and opposition parties.

India currently allows 51 percent foreign investment in single-brand retailers and 100 percent for wholesale operations.

Top retailers like Wal-Mart, Carrefour and IKEA have long lobbied to free the policy further. Foreign multibrand retailers have Indian partners in wholesale operations now but have no retail presence in the country of 1.2 billion people.

The spokesman for the ruling Congress party, Abhishek Manu Singhvi called the decision "centrist and reasonable." He was speaking to NDTV news channel.

The main opposition, the rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party, decried the move.

"The government has clearly bowed to international pressure," Chandan Mitra, a spokesman told the same TV channel.

More details on the decision were not immediately available.

India's $400 billion retail market is the nation's second-largest employer, after agriculture, according to consulting firm Deloitte.

Advocates see the move as a way to strengthen India's almost absent food supply chain ? which is so beset by spoilage, poor infrastructure, hoarding and middlemen that the government estimates some 30 percent of produce rots in a nation with soaring food costs and tens of millions who go to bed hungry each night.

If companies like Wal-Mart and Tesco are allowed to open shops of their own, they may invest billions in improving farming techniques and getting produce into stores more efficiently, bringing down food inflation ? which has averaged 10.5 percent over the last year ? and possibly improving rural incomes.

The Ministry of Commerce says it will cost 76.9 billion rupees ($1.7 billion) to build the additional 35 million metric tons of food storage India needs.

In a July paper, it suggested that loosening restrictions on foreign investment in India's retail sector could be the best way to get more storage space built.

Yet the country has struggled to find consensus because of concerns about what it would mean millions of small shopkeepers as well as the poor.

Political deadlock on long-promised reforms like this has helped cool foreign investor interest in India. Policymakers are under acute pressure to find ways to attract foreign currency to help strengthen the rupee, which hit an all-time low against the dollar this week.

Traders say the central bank has been buying rupees in recent days but those measures are unlikely to reverse the currency's plunge absent more far-sighted policy reform.

In July, this year a government committee studying multi-brand retail had cleared the idea and suggested $100 million as minimum investment for foreign companies.

The discussions on opening up India's retail sector have been going on for 10 years.

"There is a limit to how much time we can spend on a decision," Singhvi said.

Following in the footsteps of the unofficial Mark Zuckerberg action figure, some dude named Barry Moustapha (ROFLCOPTER) has created a lawyer-magnet energy drink. Turkey says Syria can't oppress people forever (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkey warned Syria's president Monday that he cannot continue to oppress his people with tanks and guns forever, even as Syrian soldiers opened fire on at least two buses carrying Turkish citizens, witnesses and officials said.

In separate attacks, Syrian security forces killed at least 13 people during raids in central Syria Sunday, activists said. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said most of the deaths were in the flashpoint city of Homs, a hotbed of dissent against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

The attacks on the buses, which wounded two people, appeared to be retaliation for Turkey's mounting criticism of Assad, whose military crackdown on an 8-month-old uprising against his rule has killed nearly 4,000 people.

"You can only continue with tanks and guns to a certain point, the day will come when you will go," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a speech at an international religion conference in Istanbul. "Sooner or later, the oppressed will win."

It was not clear whether Erdogan was aware of Monday's attacks on the buses when he delivered the speech. The Turkish leader has grown increasingly critical of the Syrian regime, and he said last week that the world must urgently "hear the screams" from Syria and do something to stop the bloodshed.

Turkey has allowed Syrian refugees and military defectors to take refuge on its soil, and Syria's political opposition has used Turkey as a place to meet and organize.

Assad's deepening isolation and the growing calls for his ouster are a severe blow to a family dynasty that has ruled Syria for four decades ? and any change to the leadership could transform some of the most enduring alliances in the Middle East and beyond.

The attacks on the buses carrying Turkish citizens took place near the central Syrian city of Homs, where opposition to the regime is high.

One of the bus drivers, Erhan Surmeli, said he was taking 25 butchers back to Turkey from Saudi Arabia following the Muslim festival of Eid Al-Adha, or the feast of sacrifice.

"We had stopped at a checkpoint," Surmeli told The Associated Press by telephone from a Turkish hospital near the Syrian border. "Syrian soldiers emerged from behind sandbags and cursed Erdogan when we told them we were Turks. Then they suddenly opened fire at the bus."

The vehicle crossed into Turkey with at least one smashed window, video from the Turkish Dogan news agency showed.

Syria's uprising has grown increasingly violent in recent months. Army defectors who sided with the revolt have grown bolder in recent weeks, fighting back against regime forces and even attacking military bases ? raising fears of a civil war.

In Washington, the State Department said Ambassador Robert Ford would not return to Syria this month as planned, indicating concerns over his safety. He was withdrawn because of threats against him.

On Sunday, the commander of a group of Syrian army defectors retracted earlier claims that his followers launched an unprecedented attack inside the capital, Damascus, in an embarrassing turnaround for the armed movement.

Riad al-Asaad, a Turkey-based air force colonel who heads the Free Syrian Army, said in a video posted on the group's Facebook page Sunday evening that Assad's government was trying to tarnish the image of the revolution.

"We did not target the party building in Damascus and we will not target any civilian installation," said al-Asaad, who was wearing his military uniform.

Syria has banned most foreign journalists from entering Syria and prevented reporters from moving freely in the country, making it nearly impossible to independently confirm events on the ground.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said a Syrian cameraman was found dead Sunday with his eyes gouged out in a town in Homs.

Ferzat Jarban was last seen being arrested on Saturday while filming protests in Homs. His body was dumped on a main road, according to residents quoted in news reports. The rights group said they believe he is the first journalist to be killed in Syria since 1992, but that a number of journalists have disappeared over the past several months.

Syria accuses Europeans of diplomatic war (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Syria's U.N. ambassador accused European powers on Monday of declaring political and diplomatic war against his country by sponsoring a U.N. resolution that would condemn Syria's human rights violations.

Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said Britain, France and Germany are "suffering from Syria-phobia."

He spoke at a meeting of the General Assembly's human rights committee after Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig introduced the nonbinding resolution. It is expected to be adopted when the committee, which includes all 193 U.N. member states, votes Tuesday afternoon.

Wittig said 60 countries are co-sponsoring the resolution including Syria's fellow Arab nations Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Morocco and Bahrain, and neighbor Turkey, which has been outspoken in its criticism of President Bashar Assad's eight-month crackdown on civilians.

Wittig told the committee the international community must respond to the "terrible atrocities" in Syria, where the U.N. estimates that 3,500 have been killed, and "the current grave and systematic violations of human rights."

The European sponsors decided to press for the resolution after the 22-member Arab League decided last week to suspend Damascus over the crackdown and threatened economic sanctions if the regime continued to violate an Arab-brokered peace plan. It went ahead with the suspension after rejecting Syrian amendments to its plan to send monitors to the country.

Ja'afari said the resolution was introduced "in the context of declaring a political and media and diplomatic war on my country."

Assad's regime blames the country's unrest on armed gangs carrying out a foreign agenda that seeks to destabilize Syria. The uprising has been largely peaceful, but has grown increasingly militarized with army defectors fighting back and some protesters taking up arms.

The draft resolution calls on Syrian authorities to implement the Arab initiative, agreed to earlier this month, "without further delay." It calls for the withdrawal of government tanks from the streets, the release of political prisoners, a halt to attacks on civilians and allowing observers in.

It "strongly condemns the continued grave a systematic human rights violations by the Syrian authorities, such as arbitrary executions, excessive use of force and the killing and persecution of protesters and human rights defenders..."

The draft calls on Syrian authorities "to immediately put an end to all human rights violations" and protect the population.

Wittig urged U.N. members to support "the strong and remarkable stance" taken by the Arab League, especially its efforts to end the violence.

Germany, Britain and France turned to the General Assembly, where there are no vetoes, after Russia and China vetoed a Security Council resolution they sponsored last month that threatened sanctions if Syria didn't immediately halt its crackdown.

It would have been the first legally binding resolution adopted by the council since Assad's military began using tanks and soldiers against protesters in mid-March.

Wittig has said a General Assembly human rights resolution "is no substitute for council action." Diplomats say that with the deteriorating situation in Syria, there may be another attempt to win approval for a council resolution.

Guyana awards large mining, airport deals

(AP) ? Guyana has signed a $1 billion agreement with a Canadian-based company for what the government says is the largest private mining investment for the South America country.

Toronto-based Guyana Goldfields Inc. said the Aurora Gold Project agreement signed Friday is the first large-scale gold mining license that Guyana has issued since 1991.

The government said it is expected to create more than 1,900 temporary and permanent jobs and Guyana Goldfields CEO Patrick Sheridan said it is expected to generate $1.6 billion in government revenues at a time of record gold prices.

The company announcement said it will pay a mining royalty of 5 percent when gold sells for $1,000 an ounce and 8 percent when the price is greater. It will also pay a corporate income tax of 30 percent.

The agreement is for 20 years, with provisions for extension.

The company said construction should start early next year and the mine and mill should be operating by early 2014.

Guyana's government on Friday also announced a $138 million contract with the Beijing-based China Harbor Engineering Co. to build a new airport terminal and add more than 3,200 feet (1,000 meters) to the main runway at the country's principal airport, Cheddi Jagan International.

The current 7,400-foot (2,255-meter) runway cannot accommodate fully loaded jumbo jets. A Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft that landed late on the runway on July 20 crashed through a fence, breaking in two. No one died.

The two deals come just ahead of Nov. 28 parliamentary elections, and the main opposition coalition complained the airport deal should have been debated by the legislature.

Rupert Roopnarine, the prime ministerial candidate of the Partnership For National Unity, criticized the government for making the deal after Parliament was dissolved for the general election.

(AP Photo/Bassem Tellawi)

(AP) ? Loud explosions rocked the Syrian capital Sunday, and activists said it was a rare attack on a government building, as the country's defiant president vowed to pursue his bloody crackdown on dissent.

Beyond reports of loud blasts at daybreak, details of the explosions could not be confirmed. The Free Syrian Army, a group of military defectors, claimed they hit the Damascus headquarters of the ruling Baath party with several rocket-propelled grenades.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said unknown gunmen on motorcycles threw first a stun grenade and then fired RPGs at the Baath party headquarters, hitting the outside wall of the building. Two other grenades missed the target, it said.

Syria has placed severe restrictions on the work of journalists in the country, making independent confirmation difficult. Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said the reports of an attack were "absolutely baseless." But at a news conference, he thanked a Syrian journalist for clarifying that the explosions heard in the area were the result of a stun grenade, indirectly acknowledging that some kind of attack had taken place.

Witnesses said the party headquarters appeared intact and reported no significant security deployment around it.

If true, the Damascus attack on the Baath Party's main building would signal a significant shift in the eight-month revolution against President Bashar Assad, bringing the violence that has hit much of the rest of the country to the heart of the Syrian capital, which has so far been relatively untouched.

In Cairo, the Arab League rejected Syrian amendments to a peace plan to end the crisis, saying the changes would alter the plan's essence. Last week the body reaffirmed its suspension of Syria and gave it three days to comply with the plan, which calls for the withdrawal of the regime's tanks from the streets, the release of political prisoners and a halt to attacks on civilians.

The 22-member organization did not give details of Syria's proposed amendments. It said in a statement Sunday that Damascus' proposals were unacceptable because they introduce "drastic changes" to the mandate of an observers' mission the league wants to dispatch to Syria to ensure the implementation of the peace plan.

Al-Moallem told reporters the proposed Arab League observers mission placed "impossible conditions" and gave excessive authority to the observers in a way that violated Syria's sovereignty. He denied Damascus sought to restrict the observers' movement within the country but said Syria wanted to be informed of the groups' travels in order to offer security protection.

"The observers, if they come, will have freedom of movement," he said. "We have nothing to hide. They should see the killings, the massacres and the crimes being carried out against our people and security forces."

An Arab League official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters, said the Syrian government was required to implement the peace plan in its entirety.

Arab League deputy secretary-general Ahmed bin Heli said Arab foreign ministers will discuss developments in Syria at their regular meeting on Thursday.

In an interview with Britain's Sunday Times newspaper, Assad vowed to crush "militants" who he says are massacring Syrians.

"The role of the government is to fight those militants in order to restore stability and to protect civilians," he said, repeating warnings that foreign military intervention in Syria would "shake the entire Middle East."

On Sunday, activist groups said at least three people were killed by security forces ? two in the flashpoint central city of Homs and one in northern Syria.

Syria's uprising against Assad, although largely peaceful, has grown more violent and militarized in recent weeks, as frustrated protesters see the limits of peaceful action. Army dissidents who sided with the protests have also grown bolder, fighting back against regime forces and even attacking military bases, raising fears of a civil war in Syria.

The U.N. says more than 3,500 people in Syria have been killed in the crackdown since the start of the uprising in mid-March. Assad, in the interview, said more than 800 Syrian officers and security forces were killed.

Assad told the newspaper he feels "pain and sorrow" for the bloodshed but insisted the solution was to eliminate the militants he blamed for much of the violence. The Assad regime maintains the protesters are following a foreign agenda to isolate and weaken Syria.

Assad, who took over from his late father, Hafez, in 2000, said there would be parliamentary elections in February or March, after which there would be a new government and new constitution.

"That constitution will set the basis of how to elect a president ... the ballot box should decide who should be president."

Katy Perry Sings "The One That Got Away" at AMAs

We see Katy Perry strip down a lot. She is not shy.

What we don't often see is a stripped-down performance by the pop singer, performing acoustically as she did Sunday night at the American Music Awards.

Katy was honored with a special honor at the ceremony (see full list of AMA winners) for having charted five straight singles at #1 off the same album.

She's the only woman ever to do that, and only the second performer overall. The other? None other than Michael Jackson. Pretty exclusive company.

While no one will ever compare KP to MJ in terms of talent, she does sing a catchy tune. Watch her perform "The One That Got Away" last night ...

Fifth Giant Planet May Have Dwelled in Our Solar System

News | Space

The work raises questions about whether super-Earth-size objects existed in the early history of the outer solar system

Within our solar system, an extra giant planet, or possibly two, might once have accompanied Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus.

Computer models showing how our solar system formed suggested the planets once gravitationally slung one another across space, only settling into their current orbits over the course of billions of years.

During more than 6,000 simulations of this planetary scattering phase, planetary scientist David Nesvorny at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., found that a solar system that began with four giant planets only had a 2.5 percent chance of leading to the orbits presently seen now. These systems would be too violent in their youth to end up resembling ours, most likely resulting in systems that have less than four giants over time, Nesvorny found.

Instead, a model about 10 times more likely at matching our current solar system began with five giants, including a now lost world comparable in mass to Uranus and Neptune. This extra planet may have been an "ice giant" rich in icy matter just like Uranus and Neptune, Nesvorny explained.

The computer model allowed Nesvorny to create a?video of the potential extra planet's departure from our solar system.

When the solar system was about 600 million years old, it underwent a major period of instability that scattered the giant planets and smaller worlds, researchers said. Eventually, gravitational encounters with Jupiter would have flung the mystery world to interstellar space about 4 billion years ago.

As fantastic as these findings might sound, a large number of free-floating worlds have recently been discovered in interstellar space, Nesvorny noted. As such, the ejection of planets from solar systems might be common.

"The work raises interesting questions about the early history of the outer solar system," Nesvorny told SPACE.com. "For example, traditionally, most research was focused on the giant planets, their satellites, Kuiper belt objects, and their interaction ? that's what we have in the outer solar system now. But how about Mars to super-Earth-size bodies? Have such objects formed on the outer solar system and were eliminated later?? If not, then why?"

"This is just a beginning," Nesvorny said. "It will need quite a lot of work to see if there actually was the fifth planet. I am not fully convinced myself."

Nesvorny's research is detailed online in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Google opens music store to US, challenge to Apple (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Google unveiled its much-anticipated digital music store Wednesday, opening a new front in its battle with Apple to provide services over mobile devices.

For the first time, Google Inc. will sell songs on the Android Market, its online store for apps, movies and books. The service is available over the next few days to customers in the U.S., but it aims to roll it out eventually to some 200 million Android users globally.

Some songs are free, while others were priced at 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29 ? the same prices as on Apple's iTunes. Artists whose work is available right away include Adele, Jay-Z and Pearl Jam. The store will feature dozens of free tracks from artists like Coldplay, Rolling Stones and Busta Rhymes.

Google is offering 13 million tracks for sale, from three of the four major recording companies ? Vivendi SA's Universal Music, EMI Group Ltd. and Sony Music Entertainment ? and a host of independent labels. Warner Music Group was the major recording company left out. Warner spokespeople did not respond to requests for comment.

Google is allowing sharing of purchased songs over its social network, Google Plus. Friends will be able to listen to one another's songs once for free.

Once someone buys a song, it can be downloaded and is automatically uploaded for free into an online locker. The song can then be streamed over computer and mobile phone browsers, including the Safari browser, which comes on Apple Inc. devices such as the iPad. People who download the Google music app on devices running Android 2.2 and higher can stream stored songs or download them for offline playback within the app.

Google's director of digital content for Android, Jamie Rosenberg, took a dig at Apple's online song storage service, iTunes Match, which costs $25 a year. Google's cloud storage service is free for up to 20,000 songs.

"Other cloud music services think you have to pay to listen to music you already own. We don't," he said.

Recording company executives said that, although some of Google's features go beyond what is offered at iTunes ? specifically the one free listen for friends, the concessions were worth the benefit of reaching new customers.

"How many people do you know have both an iPhone and an Android device?" said Universal's president of global digital business, Rob Wells. "I encourage any new entrant into the digital music space who is going to help us reach a broad audience and sell legitimate songs."

Mark Piibe, EMI's executive vice president of global business development, said Google's plan to bring legitimately sold music to people in new ways "can only be good for the market as a whole."

Although Google and the recording companies hope sharing of songs helps sell more tunes, some observers were skeptical.

Adam Klein, chief executive of discount digital music store eMusic, said that for his customers, buying music is more a considered, personal decision that is often not influenced by friends' tastes.

"A Google-Plus tie-in will not make it a game changer," he said.

T-Mobile USA, which brought Google's first Android-enabled smartphone to market in 2008, also was a partner in the Google music launch. The cellphone carrier said it would offer other free songs to its customers and soon allow them to pay for music purchases through their phone bill.

Google also appealed to independent artists who release their own music, allowing them to upload songs, biographical information and artwork to the store after paying a one-time $25 fee. Artists would be able to keep 70 percent of all sales.

By launching the store, Google is opening its music service widely. It released the service as an unfinished beta in May to about a million people in the U.S. who requested an invitation and got one. That version of the service, which essentially uploaded your digital songs for online storage and allowed playback on computers and Android devices, proved to be a hit: Testers were streaming music on average 2.5 hours every day.

Olympus plans $3.4 billion debt reduction: Nikkei (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Japan's disgraced Olympus Corp (7733.T) may sell assets to help pay down $3.4 billion in debt under a plan aimed at keeping the support of lenders in its battle to survive an accounting scandal, the Nikkei business daily said on Thursday.

Olympus's bank creditors are crucial to its prospects of coming through the scandal, given the company is relatively highly geared and is expected to have to make some hefty writedowns once its accounts are put straight.

The once-proud maker of cameras and medical equipment put forward the proposal at a meeting with creditors on Wednesday, offering to cut its debt by about 260 billion yen ($3.38 billion) over the next three years, the Nikkei said.

"It appears to be considering selling assets as a means of repaying debts, in addition to tapping cash reserves and cash flow," the newspaper said in an unsourced report, although it quoted a senior banker as saying Olympus did not face any imminent cash crunch.

The company has lost about 70 percent of its market value, and is under investigation by police and regulators, after admitting this month to hiding investment losses from investors for decades and using payments linked to mergers and acquisitions to aid the cover-up.

The M&A payments included a huge $687 million fee paid to obscure financial advisers for Olympus's $2.2 billion purchase of UK medical equipment firm Gyrus in 2008. The fee is the world's biggest, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Olympus has told its creditors that its acquisition costs for Gyrus were overstated by 33.4 billion yen ($434 million) at the end of fiscal 2010, the Nikkei said, though an independent panel commissioned by Olympus was still probing the matter.

The Asahi Shimbun newspaper said Olympus would have to write off this amount from its books, though it added that its equity would still exceed its net debt after this restatement.

At Wednesday's meeting, which involved about 100 bankers, two major creditors, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU) said they would continue to support the firm, multiple sources told Reuters.

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp is the core banking unit of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (8316.T), and BTMU is the main unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (8306.T).

Olympus' interest-bearing debts stood at about 650 billion yen ($8.45 billion) on a consolidated basis as of end-March. SMFG and BTMU have total loans of over 400 billion yen to the firm, which also borrowed about 100 billion yen in syndicated loans, according to banking sources.

Olympus's battered shares have staged a comeback this week, on hopes the company can avoid a delisting from the Tokyo stock exchange and that the brunt of any punishment will fall instead on executives found responsible for the scandal.

Delisting would effectively cut the company off from equity capital markets and make it tougher for it to survive.

But some experts say it may be difficult to prevent delisting, given past precedents, the Tokyo exchange's own rules and a sense in some quarters in Japan that the company deserves to be brought low for its failings.

Exchange rules state that a firm will be delisted if it has made "false statements" in its annual or half-year reports and those falsehoods would have a material impact on the shares.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore Take Vacation, Work on Issues

Let's give Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher credit: this couple is the anti-Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. They are doing everything in their power to mend their marriage.

Following the actor's ignorant Joe Paterno Tweet, described as "the last straw" by an insider, sources tell Us Weekly the estranged pair "had to get away." So... where did they go this week?

A Demi Divorce?!?

To Bruce Willis' vacation home in Turks and Caicos! The venue shouldn't come as a total surprise, as Willis remains very tight with his ex-wife and is reportedly steamed at Kutcher for his wandering penis.

"Things have been very strained," a friend claims. "[But] they're trying to figure things out."

Congress ready to pass bill for vets, contractors

(AP) ? Congress is getting ready to send President Barack Obama a bill helping government contractors and unemployed veterans that contains the first shred of his jobs plan likely to reach his desk for his signature.

The House planned to vote on the legislation Wednesday and seemed likely to give it overwhelming support. Last Thursday, the Senate voted its approval by 95-0.

Final congressional approval would let Obama and lawmakers claim credit for protecting jobs at a time when the public is clearly furious over the nation's unemployment rate, which has been stuck at around 9 percent. With the president and congressional Republicans in strong disagreement over how to fix the staggering economy, he and lawmakers may not have many other job-related accomplishments to show voters in time for next year's presidential and congressional elections.

The bill would repeal a 2006 law requiring the federal, state and local governments to withhold 3 percent of their payments to many companies with which they do business. That statute, which doesn't take effect until 2013, was supposed to pressure contractors to fully pay their taxes, but lawmakers now say the withholding would deny cash to companies that they could better use to hire more workers.

Trying to keep the pressure on, a coalition of around 200 industry groups ? from aeronautical repair businesses to water treatment companies ? wrote to House members this week urging passage of the bill.

"The profit margin for many businesses is often less than 3 percent, meaning that the withholding tax will create significant cash flow problems for day-to-day operations as well as draining capital that could be used for job creation and business expansion," they wrote.

Many economists have said annulling the withholding law would have a minimal impact on hiring.

Erasing the law would reduce federal revenues by an estimated $11.2 billion over the coming decade. It would be paid for by making it harder for some elderly people to qualify for Medicaid by changing the formula used to determine their eligibility.

The bill would also establish new or more generous tax credits for companies hiring unemployed veterans, up to $9,600 for disabled vets who have looked for work for more than half a year. The size of the credit would be based on the worker's salary and how long the worker was unemployed.

Obama proposed the new tax credits in his $447 billion jobs bill in September. The credits would cost an estimated $95 million over 10 years, far less than 1 percent of the overall bill's price tag.

Lawmakers have rejected or ignored most of Obama's jobs plan. The president has made repeated speeches and campaign-style trips promoting it and blaming Congress for not approving the package.

The measure the House was debating Wednesday would also expand education and job training benefits for veterans, improve job counseling that troops get before leaving the military and provide an additional year of job services for disabled veterans.

The hiring tax credits and veterans' programs would be financed by extending a fee the Veterans Affairs Department charges to back mortgages.

Want to get fit? Play the game 'Skyrim'

Planning to play "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" for dozens of hours on end? Here's how to get in shape at the same time.

By Brian Crecente
Kotaku.com

A new fitness program that asks gamers to earn time gaming by exercising is targeting fans of one of the biggest releases of the year.

Skyrim Fitness pushes players of Bethesda Softwork's latest massive fantasy role-playing game to do 10 push-ups to earn an hour of time in a world that can take 60, 80, 100 hours to fully play and explore.

Yes, that could mean hardcore gamers who wrap up playing through "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" also rack up 1,000 push-ups.

Jason Cross, senior Editor at PCWorld, kicked off the "Skyrim" fitness program the day before the game hit shelves last week. To make it a bit easier to track, and a bit more fun to participate in, he tied it to community fitness website Fitocracy.

Fitocracy, which is still in beta, is a website that allows people to track their workouts and earn points that are used to level up their account. While the website and the Skyrim Fitness program both use the honor system, trusting people to be honest about their workouts, there seems no point in joining if your intention is to lie your way through the game.

Cross said he signed up for the Fitocracy beta a couple of weeks ago to see what all of the hoopla was about.

Tying a role-playing game fitness program to a fitness program role-playing game seems like a perfect fit. The idea of creating a group in Fitocracy dedicated to "Skyrim" players, and then suggesting everyone work out to earn play time just popped into his head, Cross said.

"I figured I would be spending a whole lot of time on just one game over the next few weeks," he said. "It's certainly not completely original: gamers have done exercises as ?punishment' for losing rounds in 'Starcraft 2' or 'League of Legends,' or during the long wait of flight paths in 'World of Warcraft.' Some have set up computers or consoles so they can play while on their treadmills or exercise bikes. I just thought it was be a good way to break up an otherwise sedentary game with a little exercise."

Cross settled on "Skyrim" because he felt it was a the best fit. It's a single-player game, so you can take breaks more easily. Also, it's the sort of game that inevitably sucks up a lot of time which could mean a lot of push-ups.

While Cross suggested players do 10 push-ups for every hour of gameplay, he's following a tougher schedule.

"I'm personally doing 12 pushups, and I'll increase that by two every 10 hours of cumulative game time," he said.

The reaction to Cross' idea, first presented on Google+ and then on website Reddit, has been overwhelmingly positive. Nearly 200 people have already joined the Fitocracy group and plenty of people are coming up with their own tweaks on Cross' "Skyrim" fitness plan.

"The biggest criticism seems to be from users that claim 10 push-ups is a trivial amount for any grown person and that the hourly number should be far higher," Cross said. "In truth, there are plenty of gamers who struggle to do 10 push-ups. They're harder than you think if you follow proper form and pace.

"Many people are substituting the push-ups with 20 crunches or 5 pull-ups or what-have-you, which is totally fine. It's not meant to replace the gym, and it's not going to make the extra pounds melt off or buff you up," he adds.?"It's only meant to be a little physical activity to make your briefly exert yourself and take breaks while you play in a way that's fast and easy enough to do in your living room or den. If it's not something you'll stick with, it's worthless."

I've been using the program myself, not just for "Skyrim," but all of the games I play. I've also started using the same program with my 10-year-old son Tristan, who is allowed to game only for a limited time on weekends.

Tristan's program allows him to earn an hour's gaming time on the weekend by doing 10 push-ups, 20 sit-ups or 100 jumping jacks. He can earn two hours of game time by jogging a mile with his mother or I. As with the original Skyrim Fitness program, he's not allow to bank time. So he has to take a break every hour, or two, to earn more time.

Tristan ended up doing about 60 push-ups over the weekend, an amount that had him struggling by Sunday afternoon and sore Monday morning. The exercise requirement also led to his taking a break from gaming all together and going outside with his friends to play more.

While Skyrim Fitness is a neat idea, Cross reminds that it's not meant to be a complete fitness program.

"It's just meant to be a lot better than simply sitting in front of the screen for hours on end," he said. "While it won't turn you into an Adonis, I'm pretty sure you'll notice a difference if you play 100 hours of "Skyrim" over the next month. 1000 push-ups in a month is not trivial."

Well Played is an internationally syndicated weekly news and opinion column about the big stories of the week in the gaming industry and its bigger impact on things to come. Feel free to join in the discussion.
