You can guess most of its contents, I bet:? No abortions, no taxes, no Environmental Protection Agency,? hidden guns should be quite legal and so on.? But a few things are so weird that they are worth special attention.

Like this:

Supporting Motherhood ? We strongly support women who choose to devote their lives to their families and raising their children. We recognize their sacrifice and deplore the liberal assault on the family.

How, exactly, do the Texas Republicans support stay-at-home-mothers?? Do they get something from the party?? Like financial support?? What if they are poor mothers and can't afford to stay at home?

The point, of course, is that the Texas Republican Party does shit-all to support those women.? And note that motherhood is defined as applying to only those mothers who don't work for money.

Then there's that "liberal assault" on the family.?? As if liberals everywhere were demanding hidden carry provisions to hunt out traditional mothers or something similar.

That bit was just funny.? This one, about education, is frightening:

Early Childhood Development ? We believe that parents are best suited to train their children in their early development and oppose mandatory pre-school and Kindergarten. We urge Congress to repeal government- sponsored programs that deal with early childhood development.

Knowledge-Based Education ? We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student?s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.

The Texas Republican Party is anti-education.? The reference to those government-sponsored programs means that poor children should get no extra help.? The reference to opposing any critical thinking skills!? Because such skills would challenge the student's fixed beliefs and undermine parental authority!

I can't get over that.? If the student's fixed beliefs cannot take any challenging, then they are not that good, to begin with.

But more importantly, imagine a country that would do what the Texas Republican Party advocates.? There would be no inventions, no innovations, no change in anything.?? People would be sheep.

The impact from the collision knocked out the sailboat's steering and the vessel began taking on water late Tuesday, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Pamela Boehland said.

Max Young of Sacramento stuffed a mattress into the hole caused by the whale, turned on four bilge pumps and was "trying to bail out water as fast as he could, because he didn't know how long it would take to be rescued," his wife, Debra Young, told The Associated Press.

He also activated an emergency beacon, which alerted the Coast Guard.

"His EPIRB delivered an exact position to us, contact information that allowed us to quickly discern the sail plan of and number of persons on the vessel, and really took a lot of the search out of the search and rescue," said Lt. Charles Kelly, of the Coast Guard's command center in Alameda, Calif.

With that information, officials at the command center were able to immediately direct a merchant ship, which was about 60 miles away, to the sinking craft.

Meanwhile, as the rescue efforts were just beginning, Young was initially unaware that the boat was taking on water, his wife said.

"He was steering the boat and trying to get it back on course," Debra Young said. "It took him a while to realize he didn't have any steerage at all. It took him a bit longer to realize he was taking on water."

When the freighter arrived at around 4 a.m. Wednesday, Young scrambled off his boat by a rope ladder thrown by the ship's crew.

Young had been on the final leg of a trip from the East Coast to a marina in Emeryville, Calif., when the collision took place. The 67-year-old has been sailing for at least 30 years, but having worked on boats with his father, who was a commercial fisherman, he's been on the ocean most of his life, his wife said.

Debra Young said she has been able to talk to her husband while he's on board the merchant ship. He's not expected to make it back to Sacramento for another week or so.

Micah True, legendary ultra-marathoner, died suddenly while on a routine 12-mile training run March 27, 2012. The mythic Caballo Blanco in the best-selling book, Born to Run, True would run as far as 100 miles in a day. On autopsy his heart was enlarged and scarred; he died of a lethal arrhythmia (irregularity of the heart rhythm). Although speculative, the pathologic changes in the heart of this 58 year-old veteran extreme endurance athlete may have been manifestations of "Phidippides cardiomyopathy," a condition caused by chronic excessive endurance exercise.

Regular exercise is highly effective for the prevention and treatment of many common chronic diseases, and improves cardiovascular health and longevity. However, recent research suggests that chronic training for, and competing in, extreme endurance exercise such as marathons, iron man distance triathlons, and very long distance bicycle races may cause structural changes to the heart and large arteries, leading to myocardial injury. A study in the June issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings reviews the literature and outlines in detail for the first time the mechanisms, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of cardiovascular injury from excessive endurance exercise.

"Physical exercise, though not a drug, possesses many traits of a powerful pharmacologic agent. A routine of daily physical activity can be highly effective for prevention and treatment of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, and obesity," says lead author James H. O'Keefe, MD, of Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, MO. "However, as with any pharmacologic agent, a safe upper dose limit potentially exists, beyond which the adverse effects of physical exercise, such as musculoskeletal trauma and cardiovascular stress, may outweigh its benefits."

Dr. O'Keefe and his colleagues present emerging data suggesting that extreme endurance training can cause transient structural cardiovascular changes and elevations of cardiac biomarkers, all of which return to normal within one week. For some individuals, over months and years of repetitive injury, this process can lead to the development of patchy myocardial fibrosis, particularly in the atria, interventricular septum, and right ventricle, and an increased susceptibility to atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. In one study, approximately 12% of apparently healthy marathon runners showed evidence for patchy myocardial scarring, and the coronary heart disease event rate during a two-year follow up was significantly higher in marathon runners than in controls.

Although it has been recognized that elite-level athletes commonly develop abnormal electrocardiograms and atrial and ventricular entropy, these adaptations traditionally have not been thought to predispose to serious arrhythmias or sudden cardiac death. However, it now appears that the cardiac remodeling induced by excessive exercise can lead to rhythm abnormalities. Endurance sports such as ultramarathon running or professional cycling have been associated with as much as a 5-fold increase in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation.

Chronic excessive sustained exercise may also be associated with coronary artery calcification, diastolic dysfunction, and large-artery wall stiffening.

Lifelong vigorous exercisers generally have low mortality and disability rates and excellent functional capacity, Dr. O'Keefe notes. He suggests that further investigation is needed to identify who is at risk for adverse cardiovascular remodeling, and to formulate physical fitness regimens for conferring optimal cardiovascular health and longevity.

In a video interview accompanying the article, Dr. O'Keefe stresses that the report does not detract from the importance of physical exercise. "Physically active people are much healthier than their sedentary counterparts. Exercise is one of the most important things you need to do on a daily basis," he explains. "But what this paper points out is that a lot of people do not understand that the lion's share of health benefits accrue at a relatively modest level. Extreme exercise is not really conducive to great cardiovascular health. Beyond 30-60 minutes per day, you reach a point of diminishing returns."

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden, among others, have analyzed the yeast's genome sequenced by the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute, giving wine producers the possibility to take control of the flavour development of the wine.

Yeasts are an important ingredient in the production of various types of food, for example wine, and they make a major contribution to the taste. One of these yeasts is Dekkera bruxellensis. It is responsible for the aromatic fingerprint in around half of red wines. Yet the yeast can cause huge financial losses for the wine industry Dekkera bruxellensis can produce a phenolic flavour that is usually described as medicinal. In high concentrations it makes the wine undrinkable.

Despite the fact that Dekkera bruxellensis plays a significant role in the wine production process, relatively little research has been carried out on the yeast. However, in an international collaboration, researchers have now decoded the genome of Dekkera bruxellensis. The researchers have mainly studied the yeast's genetic background and properties of relevance to food production.

"We now know a lot about how Dekkera bruxellensis acts in the aroma formation process during wine production. Wine producers can use this knowledge to their advantage", says Professor Jure Piskur of the Department of Biology, Lund University.

In recent years, the wine industry has become increasingly interested in the properties of yeasts because they influence the character of the wine. The mapping of Dekkera bruxellensis's genome can be used as a tool for wine producers worldwide to take control of flavour development.

"At the end of the day this could lead to more new and interesting wine tastes and greater financial savings for the wine industry", says Jure Piskur.

In todays fast-paced cold world, if you make a patient feel special, most will stay with you and refer. Some will be more loyal than you could ever believe.

But since you are busy in the office or should be I do not recommend spending a lot of extra time with patients to achieve this bond. Office time should be spent treating patients to the best of your ability. Not building relationships.

The best way to create fertile ground with your patients is constant and consistent contact.

This process should begin with a series of letters that welcome patients to your office and subtly let them know you are unique.

We call these stick letters and have written them for our members.

The next step is sending a direct response newsletter that is strategically written to be interesting to get patients to read it and help create fertile ground. Your newsletter should have a mixture of interesting news and emotional stories for the purpose of bonding patients to you and your office.

All good newsletters should also contain an insert that further enhances the emotional bond and stimulates reactivations and referrals.

A well written newsletter will also help create the image that you are extremely knowledgeable and reinforce their decision for choosing you as their doctor.

As a quick aside youll notice everything I have mentioned so far I do in my business to YOU. When you became a member, you got a stick sequence. And you are reading a direct response newsletter right now. I send this newsletter each and every month without fail.

There is no doubt this newsletter is one of the most important strategies in my business. I spend tens of thousands of dollars to send it out every month. I continue to do it after all these years because it brings back in much more than I invest every month.

Besides stick sequences and a well written direct response newsletter, I contacting your patient each and every month with personal letters, postcards, marketing campaignsand unsolicited gifts.

First personal letters. I have several top members that write to their patients every month. Its a very simple thing and only takes a few minutes but is one of the most powerful things you can do.

It can be a little hand written note on an interesting article they found. It can be a
Hallmark card saying thank you for being a great patient. It can be almost anything you can think of. Dont rack your brain. This keep it simple and quick. Over time you will see amazing results.

One of the best strategies Ive heard of is sending postcards to your patient list when you go away. My member that do this ALWAYS find reactivations and referrals waiting for them when they return.

Unsolicited gift are extremely powerful. I recommend separating your patient list into three categories: A, B and C.

A patients are your most valuable patients. B are next in line and then C. I recommend sending all your patients unsolicited gifts from tie to time but A patients should get special attention.

This does NOT mean you should do anything differently when you are treating. Lets be clear on this: ALL YOUR PATIENTS SHOULD GET YOUR BEST POSSIBLE TRREATMENT.

But A patients can get a little more of your relationship enhancement efforts.

Whenever I mention this, I get flooded with emails from members asking me what they should send to patients. So lets clear that up right now.

The answer is: I DONT KNOW!

You can go on the interent and check out wholesale sites. The merchandise changes frequently on these sights and you can get great deals.

But heres the best thing to do: If you have some patients that are really, really, really special really, really, really show them you care.

Put a little thought into it and get them something your know they would like. For example, one of my members have a great patient that was golf. So he got his a golf gift. Another like the New York Giants so he got that patient a gift about the Giants.

This is extremely powerful. And, if you run stats on your practice, you will most likely discover that most of your profit comes from a relatively small percentage of your patients. I know because just about all business have this in common.

So, if you encourage that small percentage, your return on investment will be enormous.

And since like refers like you will be filling your practice with patient your love to treat, will stay with you no matter what HMO they are on and are extremely profitable.

Everyone loves feeling cared for and special. Your significant other is no different. If you treat your significant other the same way you did when you first met with all the attention your relationship will most likely last forever.

But, most do not.

Most Chiropractors court and win over new patients. And then, as soon as they get them, they ignore them and go after someone new.

This is backwards thinking. It is much easier and more profitable to do what it takes to keep an existing patient then it is to go out and sake the bushes for new one. Clearly, the most expensive patient is the new one.

Just know this: you must constantly be working on your relationship with your patients. It is not something you do once of twice and its solid forever. Ignore your spouse and he or she will leave you. Sooner or later. Ignore your patients and they will leave you, too.

Usually sooner than later.

Put in a little effort to show them you care and build that relationship and you will be richly rewarded.

Appeals court rules against ex-Gitmo prosecutor

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A divided federal appeals court Friday threw out a lawsuit by the former chief military prosecutor at Guantanamo Bay against his former boss at the Library of Congress, who fired the ex-prosecutor for publicly criticizing the Obama administration over Guantanamo detainees.

Retired Air Force Col. Morris Davis sued his then-boss, Daniel P. Mulhollan, in his individual capacity, and against the Library itself, or technically the Librarian of Congress James Billington, in his official capacity. A lower court judge rejected motions by Mulhollan and Billington to throw out the case; Mulhollan appealed that ruling, which was reversed by the appeals court Friday. The suit against Billington as the official head of the Library of Congress continues.

Davis made his critique in op-ed articles in The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post in 2009. Responding to the administration's decision to try some Guantanamo detainees in federal courts and others in the military commissions system, Davis argued there should be one equal system for all.

The government argued that Davis violated his responsibility as a high-level official at the Congressional Research Service, a division of the Library of Congress that produces objective nonpartisan reports to lawmakers, when he spoke out publicly against the administration's policy. In his suit, Davis said the government violated his constitutional right to free speech.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit instructed the lower court to dismiss the litigation against Mulhollan. The appeals court said that while the Supreme Court, in Bivens v. Six Unknown Named Agents of Federal Bureau of Narcotics, gave federal courts discretion to allow actions against federal officials for violations of constitutional rights, that did not apply here.

"As the Supreme Court has made clear, in most instances the judgment has been that Congress, not the judicial branch, is in the best position to prescribe the scope of relief available for the violation of a constitutional right," Chief Judge David Sentelle wrote in an opinion for court joined by Judge Karen LeCraft Henderson. Both were appointed by Republican presidents.

Sentelle wrote that the Supreme Court has said: "We have accordingly held against applying the Bivens model to claims of First Amendment violations by federal employers."

In her dissent, Judge Judith Rogers noted that Davis' suit alleged that Mulhollan asked Davis to "acknowledge that . . . the First Amendment . . . did not apply" to the two op-ed pieces that led to his firing.

Rogers cited U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton's finding that the supervisor Mulhollan "was at least aware of 'a general constitutional rule already identified in the decisional law.'" Rogers was appointed by Democratic President Bill Clinton.

Davis left the military in 2007 after 25 years of service. In the final two years, he oversaw the prosecution of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, and that led him to believe the system was flawed by a lack of defendant's rights and by political interference.
